Sergio Cabrera a part of Colombian Culture. He was born in Medellin-Antioquia the 20th of April of 1950, he is now 65 years old. His parents were Fausto Cabrera and Elena Cardenas, Spanish actors who were exiled in Colombia because of the Franc regime. Sergio Cabrera´s life in theater started at age 9. When a sick aunt handed some of his objects as inheritance and he remained a camera. At the age of 10 he moved with his family to China, where he completed his secondary education and actively participated in the Cultural Revolution in that country. At eighteen he returned to Colombia, linking for four years in the EPL (Popular Liberation Army).

In 1973, he returned to China where he studied philosophy at the University of Beijing and in began amateur beginnings in film. Later, he moved to England where he studied film at the London Polytechnic School and the London Film School. Back in Colombia, in 1977, he directed his first short films, worked as a cinematographer and during the 80s, was director of around 500 commercial, several of which are among the most valued in Colombia.

In 1989 he released his debut “Técnicas de duelo”, which received the award for Best First Film at the International Film Festival of Cartagena de Indias as many others awards. Another of his most outstanding works was “la estrategia del caracol”, which was premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1993, becoming its first film commercially exhibited internationally and an icon of Colombian cinema. It received, among other awards, the Audience Award and the Prize of the Federation of Art Cinemas. “La Pola” which was his most outstanding TV show as well received many awards and nominations.

Throughout his career he has received several awards such as the First Prize of the Embassy of Spain in Colombia for Best Artist of the Year in 2010. In the area of teaching has served as Head of Chair of Conducting International School Film San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba (2000) and Professor of Film at the Javeriana University in Bogota (1992). Since childhood he didn’t looked away from his goal which was to become a film director, he is an inspiration for people who want to achieve his dreams.
